Even though we may be the smallest Federation and a little bit different from
many, we are proud to be part of the National Federation of Women's Institutes
the largest voluntary organisation for women in the UK.
Our first members were inspired to introduce the WI to Guernsey in 1947 when
they returned after experiencing the friendship of the WI during their evacuation
to England. Following this a WI was formed in Alderney.
We now have 443 members in 16 WIs in the islands of Guernsey and Alderney. They range in size from our smallest, Guernsey Lilies, which is also our newest with 15 members to our largest on Alderney with 45 members and you will receive a warm welcome at them all.
Most meet in the evenings on a set day each month but Clos du Valle and Western Morning meet in the mornings while Rosaire and Fermain meet in the afternoons. More details can be found under' WIs' and 'Programmes'.
Our Board of Truestees looks after the running of the Federation and meets in a seperate building behind the St Saviour's Community Centre, Le Neuf Chemin which is the old Mont Varouf School. There are sub-committees covering Arts and Home Crafts, International, Membership Support and Sports and Leisure and these arrange a wide variety of events, workshops, competitions, and classes so we are all kep busy! Details of the various committees can be found under 'Committees'.
We encourage members to be involved in a way that suits them - something to dip into when they have time or something which gives them the opportunity to take on more responsibility - the choice is theirs. To ensure that members are kept informed of the various activities a monthly newsletter is produced and also summarised on this website - see 'Newletter' and each WI produces an annual programme.
Whether you are new to the islands or not, WI is the ideal way to meet people, make new friends, learn new skills, help others, widen your horizons and above all enjoy enjoy yourself.
Thank you for visiting this site. Remember you are very welcome to attend a meeting or event whether you are an existing islander or thinking of coming to visit or live here. We would love to hear from you so please do not hesitate to contact us.
